The benefits and perils of riding a bicycle in Connecticut

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2025 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury |

Spring is here. While some intrepid cyclists ride year-round, the number of riders and time in the saddle increases in the spring. Connecticut boasts beautiful scenic routes, making cycling a pleasurable experience. Whether cruising along coastal paths or hitting forest trails, there’s much to explore on two wheels.

Many also commute to work or get around town during the warmer months. Unfortunately, cyclists using the same roads as motorized vehicles often face dangers from reckless drivers, even if they are in bike lanes or otherwise riding safely and obeying the traffic laws.

Common examples of driver negligence toward cyclists

Many riders have experienced at least one of the following:

  • Pulling out: A car pulls out from a side street or driveway into the cyclist’s path, hitting them or creating an unexpected barrier the rider hits.
  • Dooring: Unless they are moving at the same speed as traffic, cyclists tend to ride on the side of the road that is often adjacent to car parking. Those exiting their vehicle rarely check their side mirror for oncoming cyclists before opening their doors. This can be dangerous, especially on busy streets where riders might be knocked into traffic.
  • Turning without a signal: Passing vehicles that slow down or enter an intersection can be risky. Drivers might turn without signaling and cut riders off.
  • Pass and turn: Drivers often misjudge a cyclist’s speed, so it is common for impatient drivers to pass cyclists and turn in front of the rider.
  • Failure to yield: Cyclists may ride straight ahead, which means that oncoming traffic needs to yield if they plan to turn left, but cars and trucks routinely turn left into the cyclist’s path.
  • Rear-end: Riders going down the road slower than traffic can easily get hit from behind by a distracted driver looking at their phone or elsewhere besides the road.
  • Sideswipe: Inattentive drivers (or those who want the cyclist out of their way) may pass too closely or push riders off the road as they pass them.

Cyclists should always assume that drivers in vehicles do not see or do not care if a cyclist has the right of way or is simply using the same roads.

Common severe injuries endured by bike riders

Bike riders can suffer various severe injuries due to these negligent actions. Head injuries are among the most serious. Even with helmets, cyclists can experience:

  • Concussions or traumatic brain injuries
  • Broken bones, especially in the arms, legs and ribs
  • Spinal injuries
  • Internal injuries, such as organ damage or internal bleeding

Any of these can be serious or life-threatening, requiring immediate medical attention.

Seeking medical attention and legal help

Even if you sustain a modest injury while riding your bike, seeking medical attention can still be crucial. A thorough check-up can reveal hidden issues, and prompt treatment can prevent complications and aid in faster recovery.

If your injuries are severe, a personal injury attorney can help hold the reckless driver liable for their actions. They can help you understand your rights and pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
