Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul recently made national news when he announced findings from a five-year investigation into sexual abuse by Catholic clergy in that state. Before the investigation, the Catholic Diocese of Illinois publicly released the names of 103 credibly accused members of the clergy who had sexually abused children.  The AG office’s recent investigation found that 451 members of the clergy from that Diocese, not 103, had actually abused 1,997 children in Illinois, a staggering number.

Hartford Diocese expands list

Here in Connecticut, Archbishop Blair of the Hartford Archdiocese announced on April 6, 2023, that more clergy than originally reported had sexually abused children. The list now includes:

  • 44 Hartford clergy named in lawsuits/settlements or credibly accused from 1953 to the present.
  • Nine priests from other Archdioceses or Dioceses who spent time in Hartford from 1953 to the present.
  • 11 priests associated with the Archdiocese who were in religious orders and associated with the Archdiocese.
  • Three priests from other orders or Dioceses but once associated with the Hartford Archdiocese who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse outside the Hartford Archdiocese.

The statute of limitations battle

The statute of limitations, or deadline, for filing a lawsuit when a person has been sexually abused as a child by a member of the clergy or other individual is too short and arbitrary.  The Reardon Law Firm is committed to advocating for a complete repeal of the statute of limitations or an extension so that all people who have been sexually abused as minors can file civil lawsuits regardless of when they decide to do so.
