Why are delivery drivers a threat to other road users?

On Behalf of | May 30, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Delivery drivers are a common sight on our roads, especially with the huge increase in online shopping over the last decade. While many are skilled and careful drivers, some are not.

Crashes involving delivery drivers are common due to the nature of their job. Here are some of the reasons they could occur.

Distraction

Drivers need to constantly check where their next pickup or drop off is and work out how to get there. They also need to look out for house numbers or business addresses, then, when they find it, for a parking space to allow them to stop. They constantly need to focus on things that are not driving, meaning they pay less attention to the road and other road users.

Fatigue

Delivery driving does not pay great, so many of these drivers work long shifts and pick up extra hours where possible to make ends meet. Others have another job, and do a few hours of delivery driving to top up their wages. Both situations can lead to drivers who are too tired to drive safely.

Pressure

Delivery drivers work to very tight schedules imposed by their employers and (to a degree) the clients they deliver for and to. Thus, they may be tempted to speed, jump lights or make unsafe maneuvers to save time, putting themselves and others at risk.

If you end up in a collision with a delivery driver, they may not want to hang around. They may fear problems with their boss or that waiting for the police will make them even later. Call the police anyway and do your best to exchange details with the other driver. Get medical attention if injured and then learn more about how you can pursue compensation.
