Think you’ve spotted a drunk driver? Here’s what to do

When you head out on the road, you always hope that all of the motorists around you are doing their best to drive safely, but that doesn’t always happen. You may find yourself near a vehicle that is moving in a manner that suggests that the operator is engaged in drunk driving. 

How can you spot a drunk driver?  Most behaviors of drunk drivers are apparent, such as speeding, swerving, changing lanes unsafely, tailgating, sudden braking and failing to maintain a consistent speed for no apparent reason. When you see someone driving like this, it’s important to be extra careful.

Increase your safe following distance

When you are driving near a drunk driver, increasing your safe following distance is a good idea.  This way, you will have enough space to respond should that driver make an unexpected move or stop suddenly.  Increased distance allows you to react safely and stop if necessary without colliding with the back of the vehicle. 

Let a drunk motorist pass your vehicle

If a drunk driver is tailgating you, let him or her pass. If the motorist refuses to pass, maintain your speed and pull over at a gas station or an open parking lot — anywhere you feel safe until the driver passes. While you are stopped, call 911 and let the police know what you suspect, where the vehicle was located and any other information you may have about the vehicle.

Avoid eye contact 

When you let a drunk driver pass, remain calm and avoid making eye contact or responding to any gestures or other signs of aggression. Engaging with the driver can encourage him or her to continue with aggressive behavior and could lead to violence.
